An exceptional and authentic late 19th to early 20th century Chinese apothecary chest from Shanxi Province, North China, crafted from solid elm with a beautifully aged, rich patina developed over generations of use.
Originally used by a traditional Chinese herbalist to store medicinal herbs and remedies, this impressive cabinet features 80 small drawers, each retaining its original handwritten Chinese labels and iron ring pulls, together with three full-width storage drawers across the base. The chest displays superb craftsmanship with its robust mortise and tenon construction and is wonderfully heavy, reflecting the quality of the timber.
Today, this striking piece makes a superb statement cabinet for a home, retail space, interior designer, or collector of Asian antiques. It also offers practical storage while retaining its historical character.
