A fine pair of English 18thc delftware polychrome plates, decorated with a Chinese figure holding a fan, standing under a bamboo tree, with alternating panels of diaper decoration and bamboo foliage on the flange...it is painted in blue, manganese-purple, green and yellow....both plates are in very good condition with no restoration.

English delftware is a form of tin-glazed earthenware produced in Great Britain primarily during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Inspired by imported Chinese porcelain and Dutch Delftware, major manufacturing centres developed in London, Bristol, and Liverpool, producing distinctive hand-painted items for domestic display and use.

These plates were formed from local clay and fired once to create a bisque body. They were then dipped into a liquid glaze containing tin oxide, which created an opaque white background when fired. Hand-painted decoration was applied directly onto the unfired, absorbent glaze using metallic oxide pigments before undergoing a final kiln firing.

Authentic eighteenth-century delftware typically exhibits a soft earthenware body visible at rim chips, pinholes or glaze crawls from the firing process, and characteristic wear on the foot rim. Hand-painted brushwork shows slight variations, and the tin glaze often displays a faint bluish or pinkish cast depending on the precise glaze composition and kiln conditions.

Polychrome delftware plates can be displayed upright on plate stands atop sideboards, mantels, or within glazed dressers. Alternatively, mounting a pair or group on a neutral wall provides a focused focal point that bridges classic heritage ceramics with contemporary decor.

Delftware should be dusted gently with a soft microfibre cloth. Washing should be avoided if possible, but if necessary, use lukewarm water without harsh detergents, taking care not to submerge unglazed or chipped areas. Avoid automatic dishwashers and temperature extremes to prevent glaze crazing or flaking.
