‘old Bill’ Carved Horn Beaker Of Ww1 Historical Interest

A hand carved statue small horn beaker featuring “Old Bill”, a famous cartoon character from WW1.
Old Bill was created by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather, a British soldier and artist. Portrayed as a grumbling walrus-moustached veteran soldier. He was a symbol of British ‘Tommies’ and their gallows humour spirit during the war.
The carvings reads ‘OLD BILL’ above his face on one side. On the other it reads:
‘Old Bill says, take a nip nightly and think of Blighty. Cambrai, 1917.
Cambrai refers to the Battle of Cambrai, France.
