19th Century Adjustable Oak Artist’s Studio Easel

19th century
Description

A substantial 19th century solid oak artist’s studio easel, constructed in well-figured oak with a rich, deep patina acquired through years of studio use. Both highly practical and decorative, it is an excellent example of a traditional professional artist’s easel.

The easel features an adjustable central upright with an adjustable top clamp and a large lower support ledge, operated by its original iron winding handle and rack-and-pinion mechanism. This allows both the painting platform and upper clamp to be adjusted, securely accommodating canvases of varying sizes. Standing on a heavy cruciform base fitted with the original castors, it can be moved around the studio with ease while remaining exceptionally stable in use. The paint-splattered lower shelf is a wonderful testament to its working life and adds great character.

A fine example of a traditional 19th century artist’s easel, retaining its original mechanism, warm oak colour and honest signs of use.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A nineteenth-century studio easel is a heavy-duty freestanding wooden structure designed for professional painters to support large-format canvases. Unlike lightweight sketching easels, studio versions feature solid frames, broad bases with castors, and mechanical winding or ratchet systems to adjust height easily.

Traditional studio easels were constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or pitch pine to provide stability. The adjustment mechanisms typically combine cast iron winding handles, brass cogs or ratchets, and metal castors at the base for mobility.

Authentic studio easels show natural wear such as historically accumulated paint splatters, authentic cast metal crank handles, hand-turned screws, and original brass fittings. Look for period joinery techniques and patinated timber consistent with centuries of studio use.

In modern interior design, a studio easel serves as an architectural display stand for focal artwork, historical maps, or large framed mirrors. Placed in a study, library, or living room, it adds functional texture and historical character to contemporary spaces.

Maintain the timber by applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the natural patina without stripping historical paint remnants. Metal winding mechanisms should be kept clean and lightly lubricated with machine oil to ensure smooth operation.
