British WWII Military Sniper Spotting Telescope by Broadhurst & Clarkson Ltd. (C.1940)

1920 - 1940
Description

British WWII Military Sniper Spotting Telescope by Broadhurst & Clarkson Ltd. (c.1940)

An exceptional example of a British World War II military spotting telescope, dating to around 1940 and manufactured by the renowned optics specialist Broadhurst & Clarkson Ltd. Instruments of this type were issued to British Army snipers, who relied on them to observe the battlefield and identify concealed enemy positions while remaining at a safe distance.

Presented in remarkable original condition, the polished brass three-draw telescope extends smoothly and retains its good seals, with no dents or damage to the barrel. The optics are clear and fully functional, providing excellent viewing performance, while the sliding front barrel forms an integrated sunshade to reduce glare in bright conditions.

The telescope is beautifully finished with a finely stitched tan leather covering, complementing the quality craftsmanship synonymous with British military optical instruments of the period. It is fully signed by Broadhurst & Clarkson Ltd. and bears the British military broad arrow acceptance mark, confirming its military provenance.

Accompanying the telescope is its original tan leather carrying case, also in outstanding condition. Complete with its original strap and leather-covered buckles, the case is exceptionally well preserved—a rarity for surviving examples of wartime field equipment.

A superb collector's piece, this authentic WWII spotting telescope combines historical significance, outstanding craftsmanship, and remarkable originality, making it an excellent addition to any collection of military antiques, optical instruments, or British wartime memorabilia.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Multi-draw military spotting telescopes were utilised by armed forces for long-range reconnaissance, target identification, and field observation during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Instruments from this era were primarily constructed with heavy brass draw tubes for durability, optical glass lenses, and protective leather casings or stitched leather sleeves around the main barrel.

Authentic military instruments typically feature maker marks, broad arrow military acceptance stamps, serial numbers, and specific magnification markings engraved near the eyepiece or first draw tube.

These instruments function as technical display pieces when arranged horizontally on bespoke brass stands, styled on open shelving, or positioned alongside books on a desk or mantelpiece.

Wipe brass components gently with a dry microfibre cloth without removing natural patina, clean lenses using specialised optical wipes, and apply neutral leather conditioner sparingly to stitched leather sleeves.
