French Bronze Study of a Prowling Lion on Onyx Base, Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A superbly modelled French bronze study of a prowling male lion, dating to around 1900. Rich in detail and finely cast, the sculpture beautifully captures the animal's power, grace, and quiet intensity.

The lion is depicted advancing confidently on large, powerful clawed paws, his muscular physique rendered with remarkable realism. His expressive face is framed by a full, deeply textured curly mane, while the naturalistic modelling conveys both strength and movement.

The bronze is mounted on its original pale green figured onyx plinth, which provides an elegant contrast to the rich patinated bronze. The underside retains its original suede leather lining, protecting polished surfaces while reflecting the quality of the piece's original finish.

The bronze is presented in excellent antique condition with an attractive age-related patina.

French, circa 1900

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 19th-century France, the Animalier movement focused on the realistic depiction of animals, capturing naturalistic poses and detailed anatomy through cast bronze.

These sculptures were commonly produced using the lost-wax or sand casting method, finished with rich patinas and mounted onto solid mineral plinths such as marble or onyx.

Authentic pieces generally display precise muscular detailing, age-appropriate wear to the patina, heavy weight, and traditional threaded rod fixings beneath the stone base.

Position the sculpture on a dark wood desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes and brass accessories to create a focused display.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and apply clear microcrystalline wax to protect the bronze finish, ensuring no harsh chemical cleaners contact the stone plinth.
