Sarab (or Serab) rugs originate from a village in Northwest Persia near Heriz, known historically for producing geometric tribal rugs. These textiles typically feature central pole medallions, stepped diamond motifs, and natural camel hair fields woven by village weavers.

Sarab rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool and undyed camel hair on a cotton or wool warp foundation. Dyes are derived from natural vegetable and mineral sources, producing muted terracotta, indigo, yellow, and ivory shades.

Authentic Sarab rugs exhibit hand-knotted symmetry with slight structural irregularities, a high proportion of camel hair in the main field, and multi-tiered geometric borders. Natural colour variation, known as abrash, is commonly present throughout the pile.

A distressed Sarab rug can be layered over neutral flatweave or sisal carpeting to provide texture and grounding colour. The neutral camel and terracotta tones complement contemporary wooden furniture, stone surfaces, and minimalist design palettes.
