Antique Georgian Mahogany Bookcase Cabinet C.1800

18th century
Description

A fine George III Sheraton period mahogany cabinet bookcase of particularly compact form, the upper section featuring boxwood-strung Gothic astragal glazed doors opening to three shelves beneath a cornice with a chequered band and continuous elliptical frieze centered by an inlaid shell tablet, set on a cupboard base with twin doors displaying matching flame mahogany oval reserves within quarter-veneered fields and crossbanded margins, all raised on turned feet.

Perfectly scaled for a townhouse drawing room, study or formal dining room. The substantial shelved lower cupboard handles deep domestic storage, while the upper shelves offer excellent accommodation for a mix of literature and porcelain.

The bookcase section houses three shelves, comprising a central fixed shelf positioned between two adjustable shelves, with both sections accompanied by later keys operating the locks. The piece separates into two for transit, the upper bookcase securing to the base with two internal screws.

Very good antique condition, with an excellent, richly time-worn surface patination throughout, some minor historic veneer repairs and stable veneer contraction lines consistent with age. Structurally sound and ready to place.

English, circa 1800.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in 18th and early 19th-century Britain, Georgian mahogany bookcase cabinets typically feature a two-part construction with a glazed upper section for books or china and a solid cupboard base. They are distinguished by classical proportions, astragal glazing bars, and refined timber inlays.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from solid and veneered mahogany, favoured for its dense grain and durability. Hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary woods, and mouth-blown crown glass panes were standard construction methods.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-craftsmanship, such as irregular hand-cut dovetail drawers, original brass ironmongery traces, and uneven backboards made of pine or oak. Additionally, original mouth-blown glass often displays subtle distortion, air bubbles, and slight colour variations.

A Georgian cabinet can serve as a focal point in a home office, dining room, or living space by pairing dark mahogany wood with contemporary art or neutral wall tones. Styling the interior shelves with a mix of vintage books, minimalist ceramics, and glass objects balances the traditional aesthetic.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, cracking, and surface fading. Clean timber surfaces with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, while avoiding harsh chemical sprays on the glass and mahogany.
