Victorian ‘Coalbrookdale’ Faux Bois Two Seater Bench C.1870

19th century
Description

An early and heavy, cast iron bench of a very pretty Coalbrookdale design dating from c. 1870.

.

The ‘faux bois or tree and branch’ design is a lovely naturalistic casting and this small bench is very comfortable and original with original fixings and solid oak boards.

.

The paint is many layered and in good condition. There is an area which appears to be a Coalbrookdale stamp but without stripping the paint off it is not possible to confirm and the bench is therefore sold as seen.

.

There is no significant rust or losses, the bench sits flat and level, is extremely heavy and all joints are tight. It is a very very comfortable seat and a beautiful understated high quality Victorian bench suitable for a smaller garden.

.

.

Dimensions are:

.

48.5 inches wide, 22 inches deep and 31.5 inches high. From floor to top of seat is 17.5 inches, seat is 13 inches front to back. Back is 18 inches high from seat.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Faux bois, translating from French as fake wood, refers to artistic works or furniture crafted to imitate the natural texture and appearance of wood logs, branches, or bark using materials such as cast iron or concrete.

Victorian garden benches were predominantly manufactured using heavy cast iron frames moulded into elaborate naturalistic patterns, combined with durable timber or slate slats for the seat and backrest.

Authentic nineteenth-century cast iron pieces often feature crisp moulding details, heavy structural weight, stamped registration numbers, or foundry marks, such as the Coalbrookdale kite mark, near the joinery.

A Victorian cast iron bench can serve as a focal point along a garden path, integrated into a patio planting scheme, or placed inside a sunlit conservatory alongside botanical greenery.

To preserve cast iron and wood, inspect regularly for surface rust, treat exposed metal with a rust-inhibiting primer, and reapply suitable exterior paint or wood sealant to shield against moisture exposure.
