Pair of Early Victorian Carved Mahogany Pedestals
England, circa 1850
Dimensions: Height 145 cm (57 in); Diameter 26 cm (10 1/4 in)
A fine and imposing pair of early Victorian carved mahogany display pedestals. Each of baluster form, raised on a circular moulded foot, the stem tapering to an elaborately carved bulbous knop with stylised floral decoration, and terminating in a boldly gadrooned top with a recessed platform for sculpture or objet d''art.
Crafted from well-figured mahogany of good colour and patination, these pedestals exemplify the mid-19th century taste for classical forms and richly detailed carving. The proportions are both elegant and architectural, making them ideal for flanking a fireplace, doorway, or entrance hall.
Condition:
Good condition, structurally sound with minor age-related marks and a few stable shrinkage cracks to the surface, all commensurate with age and use. No restorations or losses noted.
Provenance: Private English collection<
