Description

A fine Mid 19th Century Antique English Victorian Pratt-ware Pot-lid, "WAR", signed by Jesse Austin, the scene engraved after a painting by Sir Edwin Landseer R.A. Catalogued as No. 219 in Ball's A.C.C. Price Guide, a pair to Landseer's "PEACE", Ball A.C.C. No. 220, and offered here in good order, free of chips or cracks, mounted in a later frame. The pair of pictures, painted circa 1846, upon which these lids were based formed part of the collection donated to the nation by Robert Vernon in 1847, both of which paintings were deemed damaged beyond repair and subsequently lost following the flooding of the Tate Galleries in 1928. A thorough investigation by Art Dealer Philip Mould and television presenter Fiona Bruce in Series 9 : No. 3, of the BBC series "Fake or Fortune" concluded, on the authority of Richard Ormond, currently considered to be the leading authority on the artist, that the painting of "War" under investigation was not the original work by Landseer. A remarkable decision when one considers that all of the evidence unearthed would appear to support the fact that the picture is in fact the original.

FAQs

Pratt-ware pot lids are decorative earthenware covers produced during the nineteenth century, primarily by F. & R. Pratt of Fenton, Staffordshire. They featured multi-colour underglaze transfer prints depicting historical events, genre scenes, and landscapes, originally used to package pomades and pastes.

These items were constructed from earthenware and decorated using a multi-block polychrome underglaze transfer printing process developed by Jesse Austin. The prints were sealed under a clear lead glaze and frequently set into turned wooden frames for display.

Authentic pieces exhibit detailed stippled artwork, slight registration misalignments in the colour transfer process, and natural age crazing within the glaze surface. Many feature registration marks or engraver signatures embedded in the artwork matrix alongside turned timber framing.

Framed ceramic pot lids can be displayed upright on a bookshelf, incorporated into a gallery wall grouping of historical prints, or positioned on a mantelpiece alongside vintage brass and timber decorative objects.

Wipe the ceramic surface gently with a soft dry cloth and avoid immersing the piece in water, which can damage the wooden frame and unglazed rim. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and damp environments to prevent glaze deterioration and wood warping.
