Antique Dutch or English Georgian Brass Chocolate Pot

18th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

A scarce example of a Mid / Late 18th Century Antique Dutch or English Georgian Brass Chocolate Pot in completely original condition. Schiffer, { cf. The Brass Book ~ Page 345 C ~ Exton ~ PA. ~ 1978 }, illustrates a markedly similar piece from The Henry Francis du Pont Winterthur Museum Collection, of which he remarks, "Chocolate pots are rare in silver, but still rarer in brass". This one the first to pass through our stock in over two decades ! Unsurprisingly, the pot is lacking it's hardwood stirrer / paddle, the correct name for which is a Molinillo, with which all early chocolate pots were necessarily equipped, the beverage requiring constant stirring as the chocolate settled so quickly.

Height ~ 15.20 cm. / 6.00 inches ~ Width to include handle ~ 20.30 cm. / 8.00 inches ~ Depth ~ 8.90 cm. / 3.50 inches ~ Year ~ Circa 1775

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A brass chocolate pot is an 18th or early 19th-century vessel designed specifically for preparing and serving hot chocolate, featuring a side handle and a lid aperture for a frothing rod.

These pots were typically raised or cast from heavy sheet brass with brazed seams, featuring a turned wooden handle mounted at a right angle to insulate against heat during preparation.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-hammered interior surfaces, dovetail or brazed construction lines, age-appropriate surface oxidation, and a top opening designed for a stir rod.

Place the item on a dining sideboard, open kitchen shelving, or a chimney piece, pairing warm metallic tones against natural stone, painted wood, or neutral plaster backgrounds.

Maintain antique brass by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a light coat of natural beeswax polish, avoiding aggressive chemical cleaners that remove historic patina.
