Large Kutani Daruma Okimono Porcelain Figure of Bodhidharma

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A large Japanese Kutani porcelain figure of Bodhidharma, known in Japan as Daruma, dating to the early 20th century. Richly coloured glazes and confident modelling combine to create an impressive representation of one of the most important figures in Zen Buddhism.

Daruma is shown standing in flowing iron-red robes, the broad folds creating a strong sense of movement. His intense gaze, prominent brows and thick beard give the figure considerable character, while the exposed chest follows traditional representations of the monk as a wandering ascetic and spiritual teacher.

He carries a Buddhist fly whisk, a traditional symbol of spiritual authority in Zen Buddhism. Turquoise glaze accents the lower robe and base, while visible glaze pooling and firing contractions remain from the manufacturing process.

Bodhidharma's teachings placed meditation, discipline and personal enlightenment at the centre of East Asian spiritual life. His image became a symbol of perseverance, determination and resilience, particularly admired by businessmen and martial artists.

Large Kutani figures of Daruma are particularly desirable for their symbolic significance, impressive scale and strong decorative presence. In a market increasingly flooded with fakes, this figure remains a genuine piece of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

A Kutani Daruma okimono is a Japanese ceramic or porcelain display sculpture depicting Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, executed in traditional Kutani glazing techniques.

These figures are crafted from refined porcelain clay, molded or hand-modelled, and decorated with polychrome overglaze enamels before undergoing high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic items often feature hand-painted overglaze details, character marks or maker signatures on the underside, and minor variations in surface texture characteristic of traditional artisanal production.

Display the sculpture on a bookshelf, side console, or desk alongside natural wood, metallic accents, or modern stoneware to create an engaging visual contrast.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or abrasive materials that could wear down delicate overglaze enamels.
