Pair Gilt-metal Jewellery Caskets with Dog Finials C.1880

19th century
Description

A charming pair of late 19th-century Continental gilt-metal caskets in the Renaissance Revival (Historismus) taste, each surmounted by a finely cast figural dog finial — one a seated spaniel, the other a hound at the chase.

The hinged domed lids and bombé bodies are richly decorated all over with hand-chased and engraved acanthus scrollwork, foliate motifs and beaded borders, raised on shaped scrolled feet with scroll-and-bead twin handles to either side. The interiors retain their original rose-pink silk linings, with leather-covered card bases.

Produced in the manner of the Viennese and Hanau workshops that specialised in this revivalist style during the 1870s–1890s, these caskets would originally have graced a lady's dressing table, intended to hold jewellery, trinkets or small keepsakes. Sold as a matched pair — increasingly difficult to find together.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian gilt-metal jewellery casket is a small decorative container produced in the late nineteenth century to store rings, brooches, and other small valuables. These items typically feature cast brass or bronze bases coated in a thin layer of gold or lacquer, decorated with intricate relief foliage, scrolled handles, and figurative finials.

Nineteenth-century metal caskets were commonly crafted from cast brass, bronze, or white metal alloys. Details were achieved through sand casting or die-stamping, followed by hand-chasing to sharpen surface patterns, and finished with electro-gilding or brass lacquer to mimic solid gold.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy weight relative to their size, crisp cast detail, and natural signs of wear such as gentle oxidisation in recessed areas. Lids are typically secured with five-knuckle hinges or drop-in fittings, and screws or fasteners on the underside show slight irregularities consistent with period hand-assembly.

These small decorative objects function well when layered on a bedside table, dressed atop a stack of books on a sideboard, or placed on a bathroom vanity tray. Their metallic texture provides visual contrast when set against matte wooden, marble, or painted surfaces.

Dust gilt metal regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid liquid metal polishes, abrasive creams, and chemical solvents, as these strip historic gilding and alter original patination.
