Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A rim lock is a surface-mounted locking mechanism attached directly to the face of a door rather than set inside a mortise. Popular throughout the 17th century, these locks feature hand-forged iron casings adorned with decorative cut-outs, shaped levers, and scalloped edges.

17th-century rim locks were crafted from wrought iron by blacksmiths using manual forging techniques. Every component, including the backplate, latch bar, spring, and internal tumblers, was individually hammered, filed, and riveted by hand.

Authentic period rim locks exhibit signs of hand forging, such as subtle surface irregularities, hand-cut threads, and slight asymmetry in decorative details. They also display dark natural oxidisation and wear consistent with centuries of manual operation.

An antique rim lock can be installed on timber doors in traditional or historic properties for functional use. Alternatively, interior designers mount these metalwork pieces on display bases or frame them as decorative architectural art.

To preserve iron rim locks, store them in low-humidity environments to prevent corrosion. Cleaning should be done with a soft dry brush, followed by a coat of microcrystalline wax or natural beeswax to seal the iron and protect its patina.
