Description

A good English oak close stool with ball-and-fillet turned legs and stretchers, scratch-moulded rails, and a bold waist mould, all of an excellent colour and patina. It is in good original condition and retains the original till.

A very similar example is photographed in Tobias Jellinek's book, "Early British Chairs and Seats," on page 260, plate 356.

A close stool, also known as a close-stool or box stool, was introduced as an early form of indoor sanitary furniture during the Renaissance and 17th century. These pieces enclosed a chamber pot within a wooden box structure, designed with a hinged lid to conceal the contents and blend seamlessly with standard domestic furnishings.
