This late 19th-century oil painting by British artist Charles Leslie (1839-1886) depicts Glen Tilt, one of Scotland''s most celebrated Highland valleys.
 
A solitary figure stands beside the water''s edge, eclipsed by an immense landscape of rugged mountains and receding ridges that disappear into the distance. Leslie has chosen a viewpoint that emphasises both the grandeur and serenity of the glen, drawing the eye deep into the heart of the Highlands through a carefully orchestrated sequence of light, land, and water.
 
Sunlight drifts softly across the mountainsides, while cooler tones settle within the distant valley beyond. Particularly effective is the treatment of atmospheric perspective, whereby each successive ridge softens into pale blue-grey tones, conveying the vast scale of the landscape.
