Francis and William Brodie were probably the most successful cabinet makers in Edinburgh during the mid-18th century. Despite this, documented examples of furniture by Francis Brodie (1708-1782) are rare but include a giltwood eagle pier table eagle commissioned by Lord Adam Gordon, held and viewable in the Royal Collection at The Palace of Holyroodhouse.

William Brodie was Francis''s son, a successful business man and prominent member of Edinburgh society by day and thief and scoundrel by night. He was hanged for his crimes in 1788 and was part of the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson''s ''The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde'' published in 1886 almost a century after William''s death.

The fifth image is of William Brodie and his accomplice George Smith entitled ''The First Interview 1786'' by John Kay.
