Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Door porters, or weighted doorstops, gained immense popularity in nineteenth-century Britain as heavy draughty doors required solid weights to remain open. Figurative designs featuring military figures, national icons, and regional dress became fashionable decorative items during the Victorian era.

Nineteenth and early twentieth-century door porters were primarily manufactured from cast iron or solid cast brass. Brass examples were often hollow-backed or weighted at the base to provide sufficient stability while maintaining detail in the relief metalwork.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of hand-finishing, natural surface oxidisation, and light wear along the base from contact with flooring. Mold seams may be visible along the edges, and the underside often shows hand-tooled or unpolished casting textures.

While originally designed to hold open heavy timber doors, brass door porters serve as decorative accents beside a fireplace hearth, on a lower bookshelf, or alongside an entryway threshold to add weight and texture to a room scheme.

To preserve the original aged patina, clean the brass periodically using a soft dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush to remove dust from detailed crevices. Avoid aggressive chemical polishes or abrasive pads that can strip away natural oxidisation and historical surface depth.
