Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scottish agate jewellery, often referred to as pebble jewellery, gained widespread popularity during the mid-to-late 19th century. Queen Victorias affection for Scotland and her purchase of Balmoral Castle fueled a demand for traditional Scottish gem-set pieces incorporating local stones and gold or silver mountings.

These pieces traditionally featured native Scottish minerals including bloodstone, carnelian, banded agate, and jasper. The carved stones were precisely fitted into mounts made of sterling silver or yellow gold, frequently hallmarked or stamped for 9ct or 15ct purity.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut, bevelled stone sections and hand-engraved metalwork. Look for period-correct closures such as heart-shaped padlock clasps, safety chains, and characteristic 19th-century construction details rather than modern cast fittings.

Fine antique jewellery can be styled as decorative objects by placing them on velvet-lined trinket trays, under glass cloches, or mounted inside shallow shadow-box frames on a dressing table or vanity.

Clean gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, or submerging in water, as moisture can compromise the settings or damage porous natural stones over time.
