Introduced in 1916 to replace the traditional leather Pickelhaube, the steel helmet was designed to protect soldiers against shrapnel and shell fragments during First World War trench warfare.

These helmets were pressed from cold-rolled steel sheets, featuring external ventilation lugs on either side and fitted with an internal leather liner and chinstrap assembly.
