We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A smokers bow, often referred to as a captains chair, is a traditional low-backed armchair featuring a curved horseshoe-shaped crest rail supported by turned spindles. Originating in 19th-century Britain, these sturdy timber chairs were widely used in country houses, offices, libraries, and public houses.

Traditionally crafted from dense hardwoods such as oak, elm, or ash, these chairs feature jointed steam-bent crest rails, turned legs, and a saddle-shaped solid wood seat. The components were joined using mortise and tenon joinery reinforced with stretchers for maximum durability.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural wear patterns on the seat and armrests, traditional joinery without modern Phillips screws, and solid wood construction. Look for rich patination from age and hand-turned spindle details characteristic of early 20th-century craftsmanship.

This versatile wooden armchair functions as a functional desk chair in a home study, an accent piece in a hallway, or additional seating in a dining space. Its warm timber tones contrast effectively against contemporary minimalist or classic schemes.

Keep the timber clean by dusting with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood and preserve the surface patina. Avoid placing the item directly near central heating radiators to prevent cracking or warping of the solid wood.
