Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian papier mache furniture refers to decorative household items made from compressed paper sheets, oil, and varnish, produced predominantly during the mid-19th century in Britain. These pieces were heavily lacquered and decorated with hand-painted floral motifs, gilding, and mother-of-pearl inlays.

Sheets of paper were pasted together over wooden or metal moulds, saturated with linseed oil, and baked at high temperatures to create a rigid, durable material. The surface was then rubbed smooth, coated with black asphaltum lacquer, painted, inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and sealed with clear varnish.

Authentic pieces generally display age-appropriate craquelure in the varnish, slight wear to gilding, and hand-inserted mother-of-pearl pieces flush with the surface. Original bases were often constructed from turned timber or cast iron, attached beneath heavy papier mache tops.

A papier mache table serves as a decorative accent alongside upholstered modern seating or within a reading nook. Its dark lacquered finish and botanical details contrast well against modern minimalist backdrops or traditional layered decor.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or commercial furniture polishes that can soften the lacquer coating. Keep the item away from direct heat sources, high humidity, and direct sunlight to prevent warping and lacquer deterioration.
