A fine and rare Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transfer Pottery Chestnut or Dessert Basket here attributed to James and Ralph Clews of Cobridge, Staffordshire { 1817 - 34 }, pierced, and printed in the "River Scene with Fort" pattern. Unmarked.

Chestnut baskets are reticulated ceramic vessels produced during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, designed to serve roasted chestnuts or fruit while allowing steam to escape through pierced lattice sides.

These pieces were crafted from creamware or pearlware earthenware, decorated using a copper-plate engraving process where cobalt pigment was transferred via tissue paper onto the unfired ceramic body prior to glazing.
