French Etruscan Revival Marble Topped Guéridon

19th century
For Sale by Cella
Description

Fascinating, very unusual, decorative French patinated bronze Roman or Etruscan revival floor standing marble topped guéridon, after the antique. Rich red Rouge Griotte circular marble top sits on a patinated bronze collar decorated with bucrania mounts of garlands and ox heads: motifs from Roman temple friezes such as the Temples of Vesta, Tivoli and Vespasian and Titus in Rome. Three elegant tripod legs with paw feet and classical bust terminals and acorn details, after the antique. Obviously inspired by classical originals such as the Etruscan (490-470BC) stand from Vulci displayed in the British Museum. France, circa 1860.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Etruscan Revival style emerged during the 19th century, inspired by archaeological excavations in Italy. It features classical Greco-Roman motifs, including palmettes, animal paw feet, decorative masks, and slender metal tripod frames.

French gueridons from the 19th century commonly feature cast bronze, iron, or mahogany bases paired with polished marble tops, such as Rouge Languedoc or Carrara marble.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-chased decorative details, original dark or verdigris patination, structural casting lines, and heavy stone tops fitted precise to the metal collar.

A gueridon functions well as an occasional accent table in an empty corner, beside a sofa, or in a hallway, serving as a display stand for sculpture, floral arrangements, or lighting.

Dust metal frames with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners to preserve the original patina. Clean marble surfaces using pH-neutral soap and warm water, blotting spills immediately to avoid staining.
