Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, sculptor craftsmen favoured alabaster for its translucency and softness, which allowed for intricate detail. The Arts and Crafts movement emphasized artisanal carving techniques, often depicting idealized classical figures, romantic portraits, or everyday rustic subjects.

Busts from this period were primarily carved from natural alabaster, marble, or terra cotta. Alabaster, a fine-grained form of gypsum, was prized by sculptors because it could be easily worked with hand chisels and polished to a smooth, translucent finish.

Authentic period alabaster pieces typically show slight hand-tooling marks, natural mineral veining, and a soft sheen from original wax polishes. Unlike synthetic resin reproductions, genuine stone feels cool to the touch and often exhibits minor surface wear or atmospheric patination commensurate with age.

Sculptural stone busts are frequently placed on fireplace mantelpieces, dark wood sideboards, or bookshelf alcoves to create a focal point. Their subtle neutral tones contrast effectively against painted backdrop walls, stone hearths, or rich timber panelling.

Alabaster is a porous, water-soluble mineral and should never be washed with water or liquid cleaners. Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush, and preserve the surface finish by applying a thin coat of pure microcrystalline wax occasionally.
