Italian alabaster carving flourished during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly in regions such as Volterra and Florence. Sculptors created figurative works inspired by Classical Revival and Art Nouveau aesthetics for international export.

These sculptures are traditionally carved from natural alabaster or fine-grained marble, carved by hand using chisels and rasps before being polished to smooth the surface.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural mineral veining, soft translucency when exposed to light, incised signatures on the base or reverse, and hand-tooled detailing in hair and drapery.
