Antique French Louis Xiv Style Mahogany Side Table in the Manner of François Linke with Rouge Marble Top

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptionally elegant antique French Louis XIV style side table, crafted in the manner of the celebrated Parisian ébéniste François Linke, whose furniture remains among the most sought-after and collectible examples of French decorative arts.

Beautifully executed in richly figured mahogany, this refined side table displays superb quality throughout, featuring exquisite gilt bronze (ormolu) mounts, finely detailed figural friezes, and a striking rouge marble top enclosed within a pierced brass gallery.

The ormolu decoration is particularly impressive, with classical cherubic figures and decorative garlands adorning each frieze, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship associated with the finest French furniture of the late nineteenth century. The elegant square tapering legs are united by shaped stretchers centred by an ornate gilt bronze finial, creating a graceful architectural silhouette.

A highly desirable feature is the original pull-out candle slide, offering both practicality and historical charm. The luxurious rouge marble top provides a beautiful contrast against the warm mahogany tones while enhancing the table's visual presence.

Perfect as a lamp table, occasional table, display stand, or statement accent piece within both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French classical occasional tables are defined by geometric symmetry, slender tapered legs, cast brass or bronze mounts, and inset marble surfaces. Originating in the 18th century, these designs emphasise architectural balance and restrained ornamentation compared to earlier Rococo forms.

These pieces typically feature solid and veneered hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, combined with gilt-bronze (ormolu) or brass frieze mounts and gallery rims. Tops are frequently inlaid with native European marbles, including rouge, carrara, or breche varieties.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chased metal mounts with threaded bolt fastenings rather than modern screws, along with natural oxidisation on the underside of timber elements. Hand-cut joinery inside drawer linings and original marble cut marks further indicate period construction.

A tall, narrow gueridon works as an accent piece in a modern space when placed in a hallway corner or beside contemporary seating. The warm mahogany and gilt accents create architectural contrast against neutral plaster or dark painted walls.

Marble surfaces should be wiped clean with a dry or lightly dampened microfiber cloth using pH-neutral soap, avoiding acidic cleaners that etch stone. Ormolu mounts require gentle dusting with a soft brush; chemical polish should be avoided as it strips the original gilded lacquer.
