FAQs

Copper lustreware is a type of earthenware ceramic coated with a thin metallic glaze derived from dissolved copper compounds. Originating in the early 19th century, it was designed to imitate solid copper or brass metalwork at a lower cost.

Potters shaped the jugs from earthenware clay before applying a metallic oxide solution over the initial fired glaze. A second, lower-temperature firing fused the metal onto the surface, creating a reflective metallic layer that was often embellished with hand-painted enamel colours.

Authentic period pieces usually show a reddish-brown pottery body where worn, minor surface wear to the glaze, and slight irregularities from hand-application. Many authentic Victorian examples feature relief moulding or enamelled botanical patterns over the metallic ground.

These pieces can be displayed en masse on wooden shelving, open dresser display tops, or sideboards. Their metallic finish creates visual contrast when grouped with matte ceramics or displayed against neutral backgrounds.
