Antique Napoleon III Painted Three-fold Room Screen C.1860

19th century
Description

A Napoleon III distressed painted three-fold room screen of Louis XV design, the deeply carved frames surrounding the double-sided panels upholstered to the front in gold bee motif silk with gold braid, and to the reverse in a fine-striped neutral textile with a coordinating cream braid, the whole articulated by original two-way hinges.

Providing spatial division and draught exclusion without blocking natural light, the double-sided upholstery and the infinite articulation of the original two-way hinges make it an elegant choice to float behind a drawing room sofa, dress an empty corner or partition a principal bedroom.

Very good antique condition, the painted frame displaying a well-matured patination and minor historic losses to the carved sections, and the pure silk upholstery remaining exceptionally clean and taut. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

French, circa 1860.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Napoleon III room screens originated in mid-nineteenth-century France, characterized by eclectic historical revivalsparticularly Louis XV and Rococo motifs. They typically feature serpentine carved wooden frames, soft painted patinas, and fabric-upholstered panels designed for privacy and draught protection.

These screens were crafted with solid timber frames, often painted or gilded, and joined using brass hinges. The panel inserts were commonly upholstered in woven textiles, silk damask, or printed canvas bordered with decorative braid or gimp trim.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved crestings, natural age wear along the paintwork, and hand-cut joinery. Inspecting the hinges for period-correct iron or brass hardware and observing fabric wear around the frame edges helps verify age.

A painted screen can be placed in an empty corner to add height and texture, positioned behind a headboard as a focal point, or used as a functional room divider in open-plan spaces to define separate seating or dressing areas.

Dust the timber frame using a dry microfibre cloth and gently vacuum the upholstery panels using a soft brush attachment. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and damp environments to protect the historic paint finish and delicate textile fibers.
