Pair of Antique French Empire Revival Mahogany Side Chairs with Ormolu Mounts C.1880

19th century
Description

A superb pair of antique French Empire Revival side chairs dating from the late 19th century, beautifully combining classical elegance, fine craftsmanship, and decorative sophistication.

Crafted from richly figured mahogany, these elegant chairs display the refined lines and symmetry associated with the Empire Revival period. The warm mahogany frames are enhanced throughout by finely cast gilt-bronze ormolu mounts featuring classical motifs inspired by the Napoleonic era.

The chairs retain their attractive silk-style upholstery decorated with traditional laurel wreaths and Napoleonic bee motifs. Both symbols were widely used during the First French Empire, representing victory, prestige, authority, and imperial heritage. The combination of the rich mahogany, decorative ormolu, and elegant upholstery creates a highly desirable pair suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Perfect as occasional chairs, bedroom seating, hallway chairs, desk chairs, or decorative accent pieces, they offer versatility while maintaining strong decorative appeal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Empire Revival style emerged in Western Europe during the late 19th century, particularly around the 1880s. It reinterpreted the original French Empire style from the Napoleonic era, incorporating classical Greco-Roman motifs, dark polished timbers, and gilded metal accents.

Pieces from this period predominantly feature dense, fine-grained hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood. Ornamental details are typically executed in chased gilt-bronze, also known as ormolu, while seats were traditionally upholstered in silk damask, brocade, or velvet.

Authentic 19th-century pieces exhibit hand-finished joinery, age-appropriate wear to timber frames, and hand-cast ormolu mounts with subtle oxidisation. The proportions adhere strictly to Neoclassical symmetry, featuring straight or slightly curved sabre legs and flat backrest rails.

A pair of Empire Revival chairs functions effectively as accent seating flanking a console table, positioned in a spacious hallway, or placed alongside modern minimalist furnishings to create historical contrast.

Clean mahogany surfaces with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally following the grain. Ormolu mounts should be dusted gently using a soft brush, avoiding chemical cleaners or brass polish which can strip original gilt finishes.
