Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A schuitje peat bucket is a traditional Dutch fireside vessel crafted in a distinctive boat shape (schuitje meaning little boat in Dutch). These containers were originally produced in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to store dried peat fuel near domestic hearths.

Traditional peat buckets were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak. They featured turned or staved wooden bodies secured with polished brass or copper binding bands, an overhead brass swing handle, and a removable internal metal liner to contain debris.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-riveted brass straps, natural contraction gaps or subtle irregularities in the timber, and hand-hammered brass liners showing signs of historical oxidisation. Early pieces display fine joinery work and rich patination acquired over centuries of handling.

A peat bucket functions effectively as a decorative planter for indoor greenery, a fireside container for kindling wood, or a distinctive wine cooler for entertaining. Positioning the piece near a hearth, on a sideboard, or within an entryway adds warm timber tones and reflective metal details to modern schemes.

To preserve the wood, dust the exterior regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a beeswax polish sparingly along the grain. The brass components can be lightly buffed to retain shine or left to acquire natural patina, while the metal liner should be removed and kept dry to prevent internal corrosion.
