Description

Patinated spelter figure of a woman titled 'Dignite' (Dignity) by the French sculptor Charles Théodore Perron (1862-1934) c.1910. A copy of the large stone original produced in 1906 which stood on the Avenue de la République in the Southern Paris commune of Montrouge. A full length figure of a woman dressed in modest clothing but with some notable allegorical detail. The olive branch of peace in her right hand, a large sword in its scabbard hangs on her left hip, on her head is a crown of laurel leaves signifying victory and crushed below her bare feet is the armoured gauntlet of a warrior. Titled 'Dignite' on the front of the base and signed by Perron in the cast at the side. Very well cast in spelter with an good bronze patinated finish. Excellent condition.

Spelter, known in France as regule, gained widespread popularity during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as an accessible medium for decorative sculptures. French sculptors frequently produced allegorical figures representing concepts such as dignity, justice, or industry, designed to emulate solid bronze works for domestic interiors.

Spelter is a zinc-based alloy, often combined with small amounts of lead or copper to facilitate fluid casting into complex moulds. Once cast, the figures were finished with chemical patination, bronzing powder, or lacquer to give the appearance of patinated bronze.

Authentic pieces typically display cast artist signatures near the base, along with titled integral plinths. Spelter is lighter than solid bronze, non-magnetic, and displays a greyish-white metal colour where the outer patination has worn away.

Figurative metal statues function effectively as focal points on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or within an open bookshelf arrangement. Positioning the piece alongside neutral textures or polished wood surfaces highlights the metallic finish and sculptural silhouette.
