Ritas Bazaar has dated these Coalport Porcelain Dessert Dishes to the Regency era.
A distinctive feature of the pair is the richness of the decoration. Large flower-shaped reserves are framed by gilt scrollwork, grape motifs and finely modelled ornament, while the centres are painted with individually composed bouquets of roses, asters and seasonal flowers.
One of the dishes retains an old collector's label attributing the decoration to Jabez Aston. We have verified this attribution through the Catalogue of the Herbert Allen Collection of English Porcelain, preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where he is recorded as a flower and fruit painter working for Coalport. He spent his entire career at the factory and became one of its most accomplished decorators.
Flower painting was among Coalport's most important artistic specialities throughout the nineteenth century, and these dishes are a fine example of that tradition. The surviving label, elegant Rococo Revival form and excellent preservation add further collector appeal.
