Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Bargueno, or Vargueno, is a traditional Spanish portable writing cabinet featuring a fall-front door that opens to reveal internal drawers and compartments. Originating in the 16th century, these pieces were typically mounted on wooden trestle stands known as a pie de puente and served as functional desk spaces and secure storage for documents.

Primary construction typically utilised solid walnut or chestnut wood, chosen for durability and fine grain patterns. Ornamental elements frequently featured wrought iron or gilded brass mounts, intricate lockplates, bone inlays, and carved turned or twisted wooden legs on the supporting stand.

Authentication relies on examining hand-forged ironwork, hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery, and natural wear patterns around keyholes and pulls. Genuine period examples often showcase original iron side handles for transport and characteristic Spanish baroque design elements such as barley-twist columns or arcaded trestle bases.

A Bargueno functions as a focal statement piece in a hallway, living room, or study, contrasting effectively against neutral walls and minimalist architecture. To balance its detailed woodwork, pair it with simple textured ceramics, architectural lighting, or abstract artwork positioned nearby.

Preserve the wood finish by placing the cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth, and apply a high-grade beeswax paste sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect original metal fittings.
