Superb Quality Antique 17th Century Jacobean Oak Geometric Chest of Drawers

17th century
Description

A superb late 17th-century antique Jacobean oak chest of drawers fabulously crafted and full of period character. The chest features a striking geometric moulded front—a hallmark of Jacobean design—with two short drawers above two long drawers each fitted with original handles and escutcheons.

The drawers are oak-lined with early dovetail joinery and run smoothly within the carcass which stands on solid bracket feet. The top displays an exceptional patina, showing the deep, lustrous tones and natural wear that only centuries of use can produce.

This piece captures the bold architectural form typical of the late 17th century with its strong lines, geometric panels, and richly coloured timber. The fabulous dark oak colour and surface texture enhance its timeless appeal and authenticity.

A rare and genuine Jacobean period chest of drawers, circa 1680 — full of warmth, charm, and the unmistakable character of true English craftsmanship.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Jacobean furniture originates from the 17th century during the reign of King James I and subsequent Stuart monarchs. The style is characterised by sturdy oak construction, geometric mitred mouldings, turned legs, and dark, rich finishes.

Chests from this period were predominantly crafted from English oak using joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, oak wooden pegs, and hand-dovetailed drawer boxes, often fitted with brass teardrop handles or iron hardware.

Authentic pieces feature signs of historical hand-tooling, natural wood shrinkage over time, hand-cut joinery, applied raised geometric mouldings, and a deep, uneven patina accumulated through centuries of wax polish.

A dark oak Jacobean chest provides strong visual weight and historical depth when contrasted against neutral, modern wall finishes, contemporary abstract artwork, or minimalist soft furnishings.

Preserve period oak by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber patination. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and humid environments to prevent wood movement.
