Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian oil lamps emerged during the nineteenth century as liquid fuel lighting advanced from animal fats to refined paraffin and kerosene. These lamps became central domestic items, manufactured with detailed brass bases and coloured glass components to reflect period aesthetic trends.

Typical construction involved cast or pressed brass for bases and burner mechanisms, paired with hand-blown or molded glass for the fuel reservoir and shade. Decorative glass often incorporated metal oxides to achieve distinct colours, such as gold chloride for cranberry tinting.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy cast metal bases with period threading, authentic burner mechanisms, and hand-finished glass elements showing natural minor variations or pontil marks. Mold lines, wear on the base underside, and age-appropriate brass oxidisation also indicate authenticity.

Place the lamp as a decorative accent on a wooden sideboard, console table, or mantelpiece to create visual contrast against modern surfaces. Pair it with neutral backdrops to accentuate the glass colour and brass texture without overwhelming the space.

Clean glass shades and reservoirs using warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals that might strip pattern fills or surface treatments. Gently wipe brass elements with a soft dry cloth to remove dust while preserving the aged patina.
