Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 18th-century North Italian commodes reflect Neoclassical design influences, characterised by straight lines, tapered square legs, and symmetrical geometric proportions. Cabinetmakers in regions such as Lombardy and Piedmont favoured complex timber marquetry incorporating fruitwood, walnut, and kingwood to create figurative scenes, swags, and foliage patterns.

These commodes typically feature solid softwood or walnut carcases overlaid with decorative veneers including walnut, kingwood, rosewood, and fruitwood. Hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-planed back panels, and hand-cut marquetry inlays applied with animal protein glues are standard construction indicators of this period.

Authentic pieces exhibit uneven hand-cut veneer thickness, natural shrinkage lines in the timber, and antique oxidisation on interior surfaces. Hardware like keyhole escutcheons and drawer locks should show signs of hand forging, and the underside and backs should display hand-sawn tool marks typical of pre-industrial woodworking.

An antique marquetry commode serves as a focal point when placed against neutral, painted walls in an entryway, living room, or bedroom. Pairing the intricate wood patterns with modern lighting, simple contemporary ceramics, or minimalist artwork creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain antique veneers by keeping the room at a stable relative humidity to prevent lifting or cracking. Clean the wood surfaces gently with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding silicon-based sprays or harsh liquid cleaners that can damage historic finishes.
