Pair of Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Portrait Figures ~ "Moody & Sankey"

19th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

A large, well coloured and imposing Pair of Late 19th Century Antique English Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Portrait Figures of the American Evangelists, Dwight Lyman Moody, { 1837 - 1899 } ~ P D9 ~ H 59 and Ira David Sankey, { 1840 - 1908 } ~ P D10 ~ H 84, who toured England together in 1873, 1881 and 1882. These figures can be found, { albeit with some difficulty in today's marketplace ! }, in four sizes, this pair being the largest and arguably the most elusive. Together, the pair wrote the "Gospel Hymns", with Sankey's "Sacred Songs and Solos" selling over 50,000,000 copies, an astonishing figure, which clearly would be hard to replicate in today's more secular environment. Unmarked as one would expect, with raised gilt titling to their bases, both figures are attributed by Pugh, { Staffordshire Portrait Figures of the Victorian Age }, to Sampson Smith of Longton, { Circa 1846 - 1963 }, and were almost certainly manufactured to meet the popular demand which arose during the first visit by the pair to England in 1873.

Sizes ~ Moody ~ Height ~ 43.20 cm. / 17.00 inches ~ Width ~ 15.20 cm. / 6.00 inches ~ Depth ~ 11.40 cm. / 4.50 inches ~ Sankey ~ Height ~ 43.20 cm. / 17.00 inches ~ Width ~ 15.20 cm. / 6.00 inches ~ Depth ~ 11.40 cm. / 4.50 inches ~ Year ~ Circa 1875

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire portrait figures are lead-glazed earthenware ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, primarily during the 19th century to commemorate popular historical, political, religious, and cultural figures of the era.

These figures were press-moulded using local earthenware clay, designed with a flattened, unpainted reverse to sit flush against a wall or chimney breast, and finished with clear glazes and hand-painted enamel details.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically exhibit visible mould seam lines, a flat unpainted back with small air release holes, soft overglaze enamel wear, and natural age-related glaze crazing rather than uniform modern reproduction glazes.

Arrange Staffordshire figures in balanced pairs on a fireplace mantelpiece, open bookcase, or console table to add historical texture and narrative interest within contemporary or traditional rooms.

Clean gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a soft-bristled brush to remove dust, avoiding full immersion in water or abrasive chemicals that can strip delicate overglaze enamels.
