Pair of Antique Victorian Walnut Open Armchairs C.1890

19th century
Description

A late Victorian pair of William and Mary style walnut open armchairs, the high arched backrests and generous seats flanked by contoured arms with crisp acanthus carving and rosette terminals, all raised on turned legs terminating in lobed feet and united by turned stretchers and a handsomely carved, pierced front stretcher.

Later reupholstered in a traditional woven floral fabric, offering a sympathetic complement to the late Stuart silhouette.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear consistent with age. There is a small historic loss to the back of one rear foot. The upholstery remains clean and crisply executed, finished with precise brass studs. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1890.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian Carolean Revival seating draws design inspiration from 17th-century Restoration-era furniture, featuring high upholstered backrests, carved front stretchers, turned leg supports, and curved open arms.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised solid dense hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany for the framework, combined with traditional mortise and tenon joinery, webbed seats, and woven textile upholstery.

Authentic pieces exhibit crisp hand-carved detailing along the stretcher rails and arm terminals, natural timber surface patination, turned leg joints, and evidence of period joinery beneath the upholstery.

A pair of open armchairs functions well when flanking a fireplace, positioned symmetrically in a spacious entrance hall, or paired alongside modern tailoring in a traditional reception room.

Dust the wooden frame regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, apply a natural beeswax polish annually to preserve the timber finish, and gently vacuum the upholstery fabric using a soft brush attachment.
