Antique English Georgian Old Sheffield Plate Miniature Chestnut Urn

18th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

Everything about this delightful Antique Miniature Chestnut Urn screams Georgian Old Sheffield Plate, circa 1790 ~ Everything that is other than the indisputable fact that it was presented to Farmer E, Jones of Brynffynnon, Rhuddlan at the Bodrhyddan Agricultural Show in 1920, as the owner of the "Best Dairy Cow" in show. In view of the prevailing economic climate during those early years immediately following the horrors of the First World War, not to speak of the grave difficulties facing the farming community at that time, it would appear highly unlikely that such a piece would then have been commissioned for this purpose. Far more likely is it that the piece is exactly what it at first glance appears to be, and that it was donated, perhaps by the owners of Bodrhyddan Hall, on whose estate the Show was held, it being then subsequently engraved for presentation.

Height ~ 21.59 cm. / 8.50 inches ~ Width ~ 13.33 cm. / 5.25 inches ~ Depth ~ 10.00 cm. / 3.93 inches ~ Year ~ circa 1790

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate is a metalworking process invented in the 18th century that involves fusing a layer of silver onto a copper ingot before rolling it into sheets. Popular throughout the Georgian period, it allowed makers to create durable tableware and decorative items with the appearance of solid silver at a lower production cost.

These vessels were crafted by shaping fused silver-and-copper sheets over steel formers or hammering them into shape. Decorative elements, such as rams head handles, gadrooned borders, and finials, were separately die-stamped or cast in metal and soft-soldered to the main body.

Authentic pieces frequently exhibit copper showing through worn silver areas, known as bleeding, particularly on raised edges and high points. They typically feature hand-drawn seam lines, folded-over silver edges to conceal the copper core, and lack modern electroplating hallmarks.

A Georgian urn can be styled as an accent piece on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table alongside modern art or dark wood furniture. Its Neoclassical symmetry and dual-tone patina provide balance and historical depth within contemporary design schemes.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and a non-abrasive polish formulated specifically for historic silver plate. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or excessive rubbing, as over-polishing will remove the remaining thin layer of silver plate and expose the underlying copper substrate.
