A superb quality antique 18th Century painted pine overmantle in the style of William Kent, having a round opening in the centre for a mirror or more possibly and oil painting, with carved and fluted columns and lovely stylised mouldings and topped with a broken arch pediment. A really fabulous overmantle. Circa 1780.

Martlesham Antiques is a family run business and has been trading since 1984. Located in Suffolk just outside Woodbridge, Martlesham Antiques is run from a spacious thatched cottage housing nine large showrooms with a vast adjacent car park.

Specialising in 18th and 19th Century furniture, together with creating custom hand-made furniture which is supplied to various interior designers, trade and the retail market. Every piece on the showroom floor is in excellent condition and ready to go straight into the buyers home or premises.

All of Martlesham Antiques furniture is hand polished by their own French polishers and restorers to a very high standard. We are also a member of LAPADA, the association of art and antiques.

An overmantel is an architectural panel, frame, or structure designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th century, Georgian overmantels often incorporated classical features such as broken pediments, fluted pilasters, and dentil mouldings to establish a dominant central focus in formal rooms.

During the 18th century, overmantels were primarily crafted from native softwoods such as pine or deal when intended for a painted finish, or hardwoods like mahogany and walnut for polished timber schemes.
