A Fabulous 1930s Meccano Exhibition Model of a Wood Man’s Truck

1920 - 1940
Description

This remarkable original 1930s Meccano exhibition model would have been professionally handmade for one of the company’s promotions or exhibitions.

It is a detailed, large model of a 1930s off road truck and log trailer.

The vehicle is four wheel drive, each axle is fitted with double wheels for the excessive weight and terrain.

The truck is very finely engineered with working, turning steering and a very complicated arrangement of gears and cogs producing the drive train with drive shafts, diffs and mechanisms working with chains and pullies.

The model is fitted with an early electric motor, which is still in place but not tested, but originally would have been fully working.

The truck and trailer are very well detailed. They have been constructed from standard pieces of Meccano kit, ingeniously assembled to produce the model.

The model is fitted with a large ballast weight at the rear, giving the vehicle extra traction when used in difficult terrain.

The trailer is also double wheeled and benefits from a rotating turning mechanism at the front. The logs are genuine wood.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 1930s, Meccano produced elaborate factory-built or dealer-exhibition models to showcase the versatility of their construction sets. These oversized display models were often showcased in shop windows and trade exhibitions to demonstrate complex mechanical features like working steering, differentials, and trailers.

Vintage Meccano pieces from this era were primarily constructed using stamped, perforated sheet steel strips and plates held together by small steel nuts and bolts. Accent parts included turned brass pulleys, rubber tyres, gears, and painted tinplate panels, often finished in the iconic red and green colour scheme of the decade.

Authentic 1930s pieces are identifiable by their characteristic red and green baked-enamel finish, standard 1/2-inch hole spacing, and original square nuts with cheese-head bolts. Look for stamped Meccano logos on the central plates and period-appropriate rubber tyres marked with the brand name.

A large-scale mechanical model acts as an intriguing sculptural object on an office desk, library shelf, or sideboard top. Its industrial silhouette and graphic colours contrast effectively against contemporary minimalist backgrounds, dark wood cabinetry, or brickwork.

Preserve vintage metal models by keeping them in a climate-controlled room away from high humidity to prevent oxidisation and rust. Dust gently with a soft dry brush or compressed air, avoiding chemical cleaners or water that could strip original paint finishes.
