An 18th Century Oak Carved Classical Figure

18th century
Description

An eighteenth-century carved oak figure depicting a youthful male in flowing Classical drapery. The figure is carved in the round and stands in a relaxed contrapposto pose, the drapery arranged in bold folds across the body and over one shoulder.

The carving displays strongn character, with a well-modelled head, expressive facial features and confident treatment of the drapery. Originally intended as a decorative, architectural or emblematic element, the figure now survives as a striking piece of period sculpture in its own right.

Retaining a rich aged surface and excellent decorative presence, the figure stands on a later associated plinth.

Some repairs to feet and on loss of thumb on right hand.

Measuring: 57 cm height overall

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These figures draw inspiration from Greco-Roman antiquity, featuring idealised human proportions and draped classical garments carved from native hardwoods such as oak or walnut.

Sculptors worked from solid timber blocks using hand chisels and gouges, often mounting the final piece onto an integrated or turned wooden base before applying a wax or varnish finish.

Authentic pieces display hand-tool marks, natural shrinkage cracks along the timber grain, uneven patination from handling, and age-related oxidisation in unexposed areas.

Position the sculpture on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table alongside minimalist modern accents or leather-bound volumes to create visual contrast.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources or high humidity to prevent cracking, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying clear beeswax sparingly.
