Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A missal stand is an adjustable or folding tabletop rest designed to hold a liturgical book, such as a Bible or Roman Missal, during Christian religious services. Originating in medieval and early modern European churches, these pieces often feature ornate carving, gilding, and heraldic or ecclesiastical symbolism.

During the 18th century, missal stands were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or lime wood. They were frequently decorated with gesso, gold leaf gilding, hand-painted polychrome finishes, and forged iron or brass hinges to enable folding.

Authentic 18th-century examples typically display hand-carved joinery, visible hand-wrought hardware or hinges, and natural age-related wear to the gilding and paint layer. Look for period-specific heraldic iconography, such as a bishops mitre or armorial crests, alongside organic carving styles characteristic of Baroque or Rococo design.

An antique missal stand functions as a functional and sculptural display piece on a desk, sideboard, or deep window sill. It can be showcased open holding a modern art volume or leather-bound book, or left closed to highlight its carved heraldic detail.

Preserve the surface by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding wet cleaning solutions or chemical polishes that can lift fragile gilding. Keep the stand away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent the timber from warping or splitting.
