Sunlight on the Plaza, Ca 1940, Colourful Impressionist Street Scene with Figures, Latin American Oil on Canvas

1920 - 1940
Description

Bathed in a crisp mountain sunlight, this large and engaging oil painting captures the everyday life of a bustling church square in Latin America. The work offers new details every time it is viewed: in a traditional hacienda-style building,: a lady can be seen sweetly tending to a birdcage on the upper veranda, colourful laundry hangs across the balcony, and chickens peck at the ground below. The pastor is out, a young girl quietly enjoys a bright slice of fresh watermelon, and figures in traditional Andean dress traverse the old cobblestone street.

Painted by the Ecuadorian master Emilio Moncayo (1895-1970), the painting depicts the historic Plaza de San Sebastián in Quito, Ecuador. Moncayo’s use of impasto and a warm, sun-drenched palette makes the work a celebration of light, colour, architecture and human activity. Signed at the lower right and situated at the reverse, the oil on canvas measures 47 x 57 cm . The overall size in its original frame with minor wear and tear is 61 x 81cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-20th century Latin American Impressionism combines traditional European plein air painting techniques with vivid regional colour palettes, capturing daily life, historic colonial architecture, and natural sunlight across South and Central America.

Artists during this era typically painted using natural pigment-based oil paints applied directly onto stretched linen or cotton canvas, often prepared with a gesso ground layer.

Authentic mid-century oil paintings feature natural surface craquelure in the paint layer, genuine age-related darkening on the reverse of the canvas, distinct brushwork impasto, and original artist signatures.

Position the painting at eye level above a console table or mantelpiece, using dedicated picture lighting to highlight the warm earth tones and subtle architectural details.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and radiators. Dust the surface gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water.
