A scarce, heavy and unusual example in fine condition of a Mid 19th Century Antique Victorian ''Pontypool Ware'' Japanned Tea-urn / Samovar in the ''High Victorian'' manner. The lid, with white opaline glass finial, fully marked, BENETFINK & CO 89 CHEAPSIDE LONDON, which mark was used Circa 1851 - 1866, the copper body, of amphora form, with satyr mask escutcheons, rising from a base of ornate architectural design, the brass spigot with white opaline glass button. The question of whether this item is of English or Welsh origin is extremely difficult to decide, since the once flourishing Welsh japanning industry ended at Usk in 1860, whilst continuing at Birmingham and Wolverhampton throughout the remainder of the nineteenth century.
