Antique Caucasian Karabagh Rug 1.47m X 1.01m

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Rug Addiction
Description

A charming little antique rug, woven in the Karabagh region of the Caucasus mountains at the beginning of the 20th Century. The rug features an all over design of large, interconnected flower heads on a deep indigo field surrounded by a lighter blue border. Some wonderful secondary colours of reds, pinks and golds make this a fabulous little rug. There is a date woven in the rug but I can't manage to decipher it!

Size: 1.47m x 1.01m (4ft 10in x 3ft 4in)

This rug is in good condition with light, age related wear. There is an old repair to the side which, I suspect was done to straighten the rug - very well done & barely noticeable (see photos). Fringes and selvedges are secure and it has been professionally cleaned.

Free worldwide shipping.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karabagh rugs originate from the Southern Caucasus region, produced by skilled village and nomadic weavers. Influenced by Persian and Russian textile traditions, these carpets are historical examples of Caucasian tribal art known for geometric interpretations of floral motifs.

These rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. Natural plant and mineral dyes were traditionally used to achieve saturated shades of indigo blue, madder red, ivory, and ochre.

Authentic antique pieces display hand-bound selvedges, slight symmetry irregularities, and natural colour variations known as abrash. Inspecting the back reveals visible hand-tied knots and flexible wool construction characteristic of period weaving.

A small Caucasian rug serves as an anchor in an entryway, study, or bedside area, adding visual texture to wooden floorboards. It can be paired with neutral contemporary furnishings or layered over natural fibre floor coverings.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar to prevent pile damage. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth, use a rug underlay to reduce wear, and arrange professional cleaning by a textile specialist when required.
