A fine quality late Victorian oak and burr walnut pedestal desk, dating from circa 1880, of impressive proportions and exceptional decorative appeal.
The rectangular top has an inset burgundy hide writing surface, beautifully finished with gilt and blind-tooled borders. Beneath are three frieze drawers above twin pedestals, each fitted with three graduated drawers, providing ample storage. The drawer fronts are veneered in wonderfully figured burr walnut, displaying striking symmetrical grain patterns, and are complemented by turned walnut knob handles and working lock and keys for the central drawer.
The desk is finished to all sides, with panelled oak construction allowing it to stand freely within a room if desired. The quality of the timber selection and craftsmanship is evident throughout, from the richly figured veneers to the solid oak drawer linings with traditional dovetail construction.
