A decorative 19th century English papier-mâché and lacquer tray in the Chinoiserie taste, of shaped oval form and richly decorated against a black lacquered ground.
The centre is finely painted with a group of oriental figures amongst scrolling clouds, accompanied by cranes and symbolic motifs, all highlighted in gilt and coloured decoration. The shaped border is profusely ornamented with flowers, foliage, butterflies and insects, creating an attractive and highly detailed composition.
This tray displays the fascination with Eastern design that was so popular during the Victorian period and would make an excellent decorative piece for wall display, a coffee table or console table setting.
Presented in good antique condition with age-related wear, surface marks and rubbing to the lacquer consistent with age and use, adding to its authentic character.
